How Hard Is the AWS SOA-C02 Exam? An Honest Assessment

27 March 2026·5 min read·By Jacob

The AWS Certified SysOps Administrator Associate sits alongside the SAA-C03 and DVA-C02 as one of three associate-level AWS certifications. It's aimed at people who operate and manage AWS workloads rather than design or develop them. Among the three associate exams, it has a reputation for being the most operationally demanding.

The Short Answer

The SOA-C02 is moderately difficult, similar in overall level to the SAA-C03 but with a different knowledge profile. It tests operational depth: monitoring, troubleshooting, automation, and hands-on management of running systems. There is also an optional exam lab component in the real exam that tests practical skills in a live AWS environment. Candidates with real day-to-day AWS operations experience tend to find it manageable. Those coming purely from study materials without operational experience find it harder.

What the Exam Actually Tests

The SOA-C02 focuses on keeping systems running well rather than designing them from scratch. Questions frequently present a running environment with a problem and ask you to diagnose or fix it.

Common question types:

  • "An EC2 instance is not responding to health checks. What is the most likely cause and how should it be investigated?" (CloudWatch metrics, status checks)
  • "A team needs to automate patching of EC2 instances across multiple accounts. Which service should be used?" (Systems Manager Patch Manager)
  • "A deployment is failing intermittently in CodeDeploy. Where should the team look first?" (deployment logs, agent status)
  • "A company needs to receive an alert when estimated monthly spend exceeds a threshold. What should be configured?" (AWS Budgets with an alert action)

The exam rewards people who actually operate AWS environments, not just people who know what services exist.

Exam Format

  • 65 questions (50 scored, 15 unscored pilot questions)
  • 130 minutes
  • Passing score: 720 / 1000
  • Multiple choice and multiple response
  • Optional exam labs (hands-on tasks in a live AWS environment, not in all exam versions)

The Six Domains

DomainWeight
Monitoring, Logging, and Remediation20%
Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation18%
Networking and Content Delivery18%
Reliability and Business Continuity16%
Security and Compliance16%
Cost and Performance Optimization12%

Monitoring and Deployment together make up nearly 40% of the exam. These are the areas to prioritise.

What Makes It Challenging

The Operational Depth Required

The SOA-C02 expects you to know how things work when they go wrong. CloudWatch metrics, alarms, and log groups. Systems Manager for patching, parameter store, and run command. Trusted Advisor and its check categories. Config rules and auto-remediation. This is deeper operational knowledge than the SAA-C03, which mostly asks what to use rather than how to operate it.

Monitoring and Troubleshooting

The exam heavily tests CloudWatch: the difference between standard and detailed monitoring, custom metrics, metric math, and composite alarms. CloudTrail vs CloudWatch Logs vs VPC Flow Logs vs Config. Knowing which tool gives you which type of visibility is a consistent source of marks.

Automation Services

A significant portion of the exam involves automation: CloudFormation, Systems Manager, EventBridge, and CodeDeploy. Questions test how these services integrate. Knowing Systems Manager beyond just "it manages EC2" is important, particularly Patch Manager, Session Manager, and State Manager.

Networking Troubleshooting

VPC flow logs, security groups vs NACLs (and why one is stateful and one isn't), route table rules, VPC peering vs Transit Gateway. The networking domain tests configuration and troubleshooting, not just conceptual knowledge.

What Makes It Manageable

Logical, Operational Content

The SOA-C02 covers the things AWS operators actually deal with. If you work with AWS in an operations or platform engineering role, much of this material is day-to-day knowledge. The exam validates real skills rather than testing obscure service trivia.

Good Study Resources Available

The Stephane Maarek SOA-C02 course on Udemy is comprehensive and regularly updated. The official AWS practice exam from AWS Skill Builder gives you a realistic sense of question style and difficulty.

130 Minutes Is Reasonable

With 65 questions in 130 minutes, you have 2 minutes per question. The questions are scenario-based and require some reading, but the time is sufficient for candidates who have prepared.

Pass Rate

The SOA-C02 is generally considered slightly harder than the SAA-C03 among candidates who have taken both. Community estimates put the first-attempt pass rate around 55–65% for candidates who have studied. The operational depth and troubleshooting focus mean that study-only candidates without hands-on experience struggle more than they would on the SAA-C03.

How Long to Prepare

BackgroundEstimated Prep Time
No AWS experience14–18 weeks
Cloud Practitioner or SAA-C03 level8–10 weeks
Active AWS operations role4–6 weeks focused exam prep
  1. Get hands-on with the operational services. Create CloudWatch alarms, configure Systems Manager, set up Config rules, and use CloudTrail to trace activity. Operational questions are much easier when you've done the tasks yourself.
  2. Master the monitoring stack. CloudWatch (metrics, alarms, logs, dashboards), CloudTrail, Config, and Trusted Advisor. Know what each covers and when to use which.
  3. Study Systems Manager in depth. Patch Manager, Parameter Store, Session Manager, and Run Command appear frequently.
  4. Review the networking troubleshooting scenarios. Security groups vs NACLs, VPC flow logs, route tables.
  5. Take practice exams. Use the SOA-C02 practice exams to find your weak areas before you book.

Bottom Line

The SOA-C02 rewards operational experience more than any other AWS associate exam. Candidates who manage AWS environments day-to-day will find it more intuitive than the SAA-C03. Candidates coming from a pure study background without hands-on exposure will find the troubleshooting and operational depth harder to prepare for. Get hands-on time with the operational services and the exam becomes much more approachable.
