The HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004) is HashiCorp's foundational certification for infrastructure as code. It validates that you understand the basic concepts and skills behind Terraform, the open infrastructure as code tool used to provision resources across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, and hundreds of other platforms, as well as HCP Terraform, HashiCorp's managed service for running Terraform as a team. The 004 version of the exam tests Terraform 1.12.

The certification is aimed at cloud engineers, DevOps engineers, platform engineers, site reliability engineers, and developers who write or review Terraform code. HashiCorp recommends basic terminal skills and an understanding of on-premises and cloud architecture. Professional Terraform experience is helpful but not required, as long as you've practised the exam objectives yourself in a demo or sandbox environment.

The exam is a one hour, online proctored test delivered in English. Questions are multiple choice style, including multiple answer and true or false items, and cover eight objectives: infrastructure as code concepts, Terraform fundamentals, the core Terraform workflow, Terraform configuration, modules, state management, maintaining infrastructure, and HCP Terraform. The 004 version adds new material on lifecycle rules such as create_before_destroy, custom conditions, ephemeral values and write-only arguments, and organising HCP Terraform workspaces into projects. The certification costs $70.50 plus local taxes and is valid for two years.

Mock exam practice matters for this exam because many questions hinge on precise CLI behaviour and HCL semantics. You need to know exactly what terraform init does to the lock file, when a plan is saved versus speculative, how variable precedence resolves, which backends support locking, and how a moved block differs from terraform state mv. These details are easy to confuse under time pressure, and working through realistic questions is the fastest way to find the gaps before exam day.

These practice sets contain 500 unique exam-style questions across 25 sets of 20, weighted across all eight official objectives. Every question includes a detailed explanation of why the correct answer is right and why the alternatives are wrong, so you learn the underlying Terraform behaviour rather than memorising answers. The first set is completely free, so you can check your readiness before you commit.
